Si in toiul iernii am aflat in sfarsit ca port in mine o vara de neinvins.  Albert Camus.

Daca ti-a placut Dincolo de iarna, iti recomand si :

1.Casa SpiritelorIsabel Allende – Nu am cum sa nu recomand cea mai cunoscuta carte a lui Allende, scrisa sub forma unei scrisori catre bunicul ei, in care dezvaluie saga familiei Trueba.

Although Isabel Allende’s first novel, The House of  the Spirits, came out in 1982, just two years ago I started reading it. Since then I have tried to put my hand on everything she wrote, wondering every time about her „magical realism”. For me, Allende is the queen of storytelling, with a cursive style that goes naturally and leads you to the end of the story without realizing it. A sort of modern Seherezada that does not have to face the fear of a tyrant’s execution, but a more metaphorical one, fear of public execution. But I, and many others, Allende, would not put you on a guillotine, but on a pedestal.

In the midst of winter shows us several social themes, including family violence, raising a child with disabilities, fear, shame, unconditional love, and fear of losing it. But the most important issue remains for emigrants arriving in America, seeking nothing but their right to life. Perhaps the are the kind of books  Donald Trump should read before building a wall at the border.

At the beginning of the book, the three main characters, Lucia, Richard and Evelyn, reunite in a winter landscape with snow and blizzard and embark on a journey worthy of a police novel , but one in which he emerges love, strong women who devote themselves totally to souls who need them, and a man who now learns to forgive.

As we walk into the story, we go back to the lives of the protagonists, and with every onion sheet that you unfold, we find out more about what brought them to this point, as they are now. There are unimaginable things that reflect the reality of Guatemala, full of poverty, school dropout, drugs, street gangs, crimes and rapes covered. Then we have the road to America, through Mexico, which, although many start it, very few end it. In the same note is the reality in Chile, where a coup d’etat and a new dictatorship bring the  fear of being accused of being a member of the guerrilla or sympathizer, crimes and political jails.

After all these hard times, the three characters find their peace at the end of the novel.

In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.
Albert Camus

If you liked In the midst of winter, I also recommend:

1. Isabel Allende‘s House of the Spirits – I can`t not recommend Allende’s most famous book, written in the form of a letter to her grandfather, in which she reveals the Trueba family’s saga.

2. Kafka on the SeaHaruki Murakami – Another kind of magical realism is found at Murakami, where you do not even wonder when someone talks to cats or fish fall from the sky

3.  Three Daughters of EveElif Shafak – The story of three women who come from different worlds and have to go over the prejudices and life`s struggles, told just as beautiful.

Read and be happy 🙂
